Carmen's sixth sense, his
intuition, told him that something was not right. Acting on instincts alone, he
immediately pulled back from the open doorway to the large, construction
building. It should not have been open.
"What
is going on here?" he wondered. Was sheer instinct sufficient reason for
him to back away? Regardless, he pulled back further and further, concealing
himself deep in the dark shadows cast by the construction building.
"Something
is not right!" He listened closely and the silence seemed almost
deafening. "It is too quiet here!" he thought to himself. Normally,
there would be some night sounds, but total silence? "There should be a
watch dog barking!"
Carmen
was a young, independent, private investigator, whose livelihood depended upon
his astuteness and awareness of what was going on around him. He also knew that
being constantly alert to what was happening could possibly save his life.
Little did he know how true that was going to be.
He
cautiously backed further into the dark shadows, aware that something was
happening inside. Just
in time, he managed to stifle a sneeze, as he caught a whiff of a heavy,
pungent odor that penetrated the air. He instinctively covered his face with
his scarf. He
waited. Several minutes later, he heard heavy footsteps coming from within the
building, as someone was heading towards the doorway. Carmen
ducked down.
"We'd
better get out of here before we suffocate too," the heavy set, middle age
man said to his younger
companion, who was slighter of build.
"There
is nothing more we need to do at the moment," replied the young man.
"Gustaf will have to shut down his whole operation, at least until that
gas leak is repaired."
"He
will have to find it first."
"Will
he be angry, or what!"
The
men laughed aloud, as they headed towards the parking lot and drove off into the night in a large, company truck. They failed to see was the private
investigator snapping photos of them, as they left.
The
private investigator quickly moved further away from the building, fearful of a
possible explosion.
"So
Gustaf was right!"
He dialed 911 on his
smart phone. "The business is being sabotaged, just like he thought."
Gustaf,
who was expecting his call, answered immediately.
"I
have just sent you some photos," said Carmen.
"You
are worth your weight in gold!" replied Gustaf, as he quickly checked
through them.
"You
will need to be cautious when you get here if you enter your building,
as I think your dog may have suffered ill effects from some kind of a
gas."
"Barney?
Oh no!"
"I
notified the police and the fire department. I can hear their sirens in the
distance, so they should be here within a couple of minutes."
"I
am on my way, too!"
There
was no doubt that Carmen's instincts had been one hundred percent correct. The
police immediately found the watchdog lying on the cement floor.
"So
this is company sabotage and my instincts were right, too," said the
owner. "It is internal sabotage, at that. These two men were the last ones
I ever expected to betray my trust."
