From Rudolf's Point of View: An Early Christmas

It was the night before Christmas Eve. Rudolph was having difficulty sleeping, as his responsibilities were weighing heavily upon him. "Being endowed with a light has been a wonderful blessing,' thought Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer. “It forced me to grow up too fast\, and placed me in a highly responsible position as the lead reindeer for Santa's sleigh."

Just then, he heard footsteps in the snow and a quiet tap on the barn door. He quickly looked at the clock and it was only two am. "I wonder who that could be."

"Wake up the rest of the reindeer," whispered. Sven, one of Santa's  elves. "We have an emergency."

One by one, Rudolph woke up Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen. He was always noisy and cranky if anyone woke him up for any reason. Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen woke up because of the ruckus he created.

"We have an emergency," said Rudolph calmly, not wanting to upset any of them. He was also curious as to why the reindeer had to get up at this time of night, especially on this night of all nights.

Sven was waiting for the reindeer outside, as they came out one by one, stretching and yawning. Sven was shivering. He appeared tired and pale in the bright moonlight. Something was obviously wrong.

"Our control center has been down," said Sven, as Rudolph and the other reindeer waited for him to speak. "Santa and his engineer have been working on the problem for hours. He asked me to bring the reindeer over immediately. We cannot wait until tonight to leave."

"It looks like it is going to be an early Christmas!" thought Rudolph to himself. From his point of view, knowing this was a serious problem, he knew that it was a matter of getting the reindeer to work together with him, Sven and Santa. Rudolph was by nature, a very wise, kind and loving reindeer with natural leadership abilities, but not always appreciated by all of the other reindeer, who tended to be jealous. Getting everyone in the reindeer community to participate in anything was never easy, as it meant dealing with all of their grumbling and complaining. Reindeer protests were common and resolution was seldom easy.

"We have an urgent request from Santa," Rudolph advised the other reindeer quietly, as his red nose shone brighter and brighter. "As his Christmas reindeer, we always honor his requests." But, there was something magical about his words and his bright light compelled the other reindeer to work with him, instead of against him.

A few moments later, Rudolph led all of the reindeer to Santa's workshop, where he was waiting for them with his sleigh all ready to go, much to everyone's surprise.

"Ho, ho, ho!" he said to Rudolph, with a happy smile. He loved everything about Christmas. "Thanks for bringing all of the reindeer so quickly," he said to Sven.

"Rudolph, it looks like we have to leave early this time. Our timing for Christmas will depend upon how well the control center is working now, or whether it needs more fine tuning en route. If everything is working properly again, we will get back home early."

Rudolph understood, but would the other reindeer? He quietly explained the situation to them in reindeer language and answered their numerous questions.

"We can do this!" he said, enthusiastically. "Let's get the job done, fellows!"

Santa smiled, as he saw their eyes light up with excitement.

"How does Rudolph do this?" he wondered. "He is so amazing!"

Just then, Mrs. Claus came outside with hearty Christmas snacks for Santa Claus, the engineer and Sven, as well as Rudolph and the other reindeer.

"Better an early Christmas than a late one," thought Sven to himself, as he lined up the reindeer in front of the sleigh. He patted Rudolph on the head.

Santa gave Mrs. Claus a hug and promised to come home early.

"Go easy on those Christmas cookies," she advised him, with a twinkle in her deep, blue eyes. Somehow, Santa always put on a few extra pounds at Christmas.

"Well done," Santa whispered in Rudolph's ear, as he quickly checked everything. "You are the best!"

"Just doing my job," relied Rudolph.
